The Early Days of the 2026 Track Season

Finally, after a not-so-winter-like winter, March has rolled around and track season is officially upon us. Last year, the boys placed 3rd at districts as a team, sending 4 athletes to state where they tied for 7th with Weston-McEwen, and the girls placed 5th at districts, sending only 1 athlete to state. I interviewed returning athletes Andrew Thurman and Logan Westin, along with newcomer Victory Tonfa to preview this season and what they hope to accomplish.

Question #1 – What events do you do/want to do?

Logan – “I’m thinking of trying long jump but I do the 100m, discus, shot put, and javelin.”

Victory – “I want to do shot put, long jump, probably javelin if I feel up to it, and I want to try the sprints.”

Andrew – “I do the 1500m, 3000m, and the 4×400 relay.”

Question #2 – How are practices so far?

Logan – “Pretty good. We have Coach Valadez out there coaching the throwers and it’s going a lot better than last year.”

Victory – “I love practice. The energy is so fun, everyone is so supportive, the coaches are so nice, and it’s just really great.”

Andrew – “It’s going good. They’re long practices but they’re just practices.”

Question #3 – What goals do you hope to accomplish this season?

Logan – “Throw 130ft in discus, maybe higher, break 30ft in shot put, and probably hit 15 or 14 seconds in the 100m.”

Victory – “Right now, my goal is to just show up and do my best but as the season goes on, my goals will probably get more specific.

Andrew – “Hopefully win state in the 3000m.”
